Muskwacis Fire Department: Fire Chief

POSITION: FIRE CHIEF

DEPARTMENT: MASKWACIS FIRE DEPARTMENT


SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Emergency Management Operations Manager, the Fire Chief shall manage the overall operations of the Maskwacis Fire Department and coordinate the planning and implementation of emergency responses. The Fire Chief will inspect and enforce the requirements of the National Building Code, National Fire Code and National Electrical Code. The Fire Chief will also take on the role of Director of Emergency Management in emergent situations.


Duties and Responsibilities:

· Manage the department’s operational functions including: budgeting, employee files, general ledgers, written monthly reports, tracking of monthly statistics (call log), precise record-keeping

· Organizing and directing the Maskwacis Fire Department to minimize the loss life, property and injury from fire (and other emergencies) is prevented and/or minimized.

· Recruitment and training of Fire Fighters with supervision and support of Fire Fighters.

· Management of equipment and assets – upkeep of vehicle/truck maintenance.

· Ensure firefighting equipment is up-to-date, maintained, serviced and in good working order.

· Develop fire safety policies, procedures, by-laws in accordance with federal and provincial legislation.

· Promote fire prevention through education programs for community members and businesses.

· Develop and implement emergency response plans – roles and responsibilities during emergencies.

· Managing resources for emergency preparedness, planning and recovery activities.

· Act as a Liaison with all levels of government both indigenous and non-indigenous.

· Enhance community capacity and resiliency while supporting indigenous self-determination in emergency management.

· Act as incident commander by reporting to Chief & Council, Band Administrator and/or General Manager to oversee response operations.

· Coordinate logistics, communications, financial administration during an emergency.

· Assist with recovery efforts and the management of expenses in unforeseen/unbudgeted emergencies.

· Risk assessment and mitigation to identify any potential impacts on the community and support mitigation efforts to reduce the effects of future emergencies.


Qualifications:

· NFPA 1001: Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification

· Minimum of five (5) years experience in fire services, with at least 2 years in a command position.

· Willingness to complete Fire Officer courses including: Fire Investigations, Fire Instruction, First Aide and Fire Safety Practices.

· Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project) – written monthly reporting and public speaking will also be required.

· Strong coordination and organizational skills

· Attention to detail and accuracy

· Excellent written and interpersonal skills

· Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

· Must be physically fit with the ability to perform the duties of the position without hazard to self or others.

· Must submit a resume, a clear criminal record check, a valid driver’s license (preferably Class 3 with Q endorsement) and have own transportation

· May be subject to drug and alcohol testing
