Hydroponic Technician / Farm Operator-Department: Projects Department Business Development Pillar Samson Cree Nation

Summary:

Reporting to the Business Development Project Manager, the Hydroponic Technician will be responsible for completing regular farming, cleaning and maintenance duties in a new, year-round indoor greenhouse producing fresh, local vegetables for the local community. The Technician will be responsible for following instructions and procedures while ensuring we deliver the highest-quality product to our community and customers.


Prior background in commercial agriculture or hydroponics is not a necessity for applicants. The successful individual will receive comprehensive on-site instruction and technical training to master indoor crop cultivation. Our primary requirement is for dedicated, industrious personnel who possess a desire for rapid professional growth. Natural aptitude for gardening and an enthusiasm for nutrition are considered significant advantages for this role.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Farm Operations

● Gather, sanitize, and bundle all harvestable crops.

● Support the distribution and marketing of vegetables, providing item demonstrations to the public as required.

● Execute daily operational tasks such as sowing, moving seedlings, and conducting routine sanitation and upkeep as directed.

● Strictly adhere to established operational manuals and instructional guidance, maintaining full compliance with safety and farming protocols.

● Assist in diagnosing and resolving technical or plant-related challenges as proficiency with the systems increases.

● Advocate for local food systems and healthy living by managing promotional displays at various venues

● Engage in professional development regarding agricultural technology and workplace safety, applying these principles to daily responsibilities

● Keep accurate operational logs and uphold alignment with all relevant regulatory requirements.

● Carry out other related duties as required.


Additional Responsibilities:

● Facilitate farm classes/workshops

● Assist SCN Business Development Project Manager with tasks when needed.



Knowledge and Abilities:

● Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, organized and have strong problem-solving abilities

● Demonstrated experience following instructions and procedures

● Strong customer service skills

● Proven track record of working effectively in teams

● Comfortable with technology, such as Google & Microsoft Office suites, and iPads/Windows computers

● Ability to work independently without direct supervision

● Good reading and writing skills

● Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment, showing adaptability and resiliency through unforeseen challenges

● Self-starter, capable of driving projects with minimal oversight

● Must be comfortable driving a small delivery van/truck.


Qualifications:

Mandatory

● Educational background in horticulture, agriculture, or a related discipline

● Prior experience in the cultivation of vegetables or various plant species

● Clear Criminal Record Check

● Must submit a resume and a copy of Class 5 Driver's License with application

● Must have own transportation and will be required to provide proof of registration and insurance for their vehicle

● Must be able to lift boxes up to 25 lbs., or 50 lbs with assistance, climb small step ladders, and work full shifts on your feet

● Must be able & willing to travel within Canada for training

Preferred Assets (not mandatory)

● Educational background in horticulture, agriculture, or a related discipline

● Prior experience in the cultivation of vegetables or various plant species
