ABOUT IRON & EARTH Who we are & where we come from: Iron & Earth is a non-profit organization with roots in the fossil fuel industry. What we do: We create pathways to opportunities in the net-zero economy for fossil fuel workers, Indigenous Peoples, and their communities.
How we do it: Our programs lower barriers to building community-led climate solutions for a sustainable future through engagement, training programs, infrastructure projects, and career platforms. Where Iron & Earth meet: We have not forgotten who we are, and our new vision sets our sights on who we want to be. Throughout 2020, Iron & Earth worked with Desmond Bull from the Louis Bull Tribe to develop two community-based rapid upskilling programs for fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers: a solar program and a wind energy program. These programs include in-class work and hands-on training which involves the installation of a small solar or wind energy system. In 2022, we partnered with Maskwacis Cultural College (MCC) for the first time and delivered a Community Solar Skills Training Program in April and a Community Wind Skills Training Program in August.
ABOUT THE JOB We are proud to be partnering again in 2023 with Maskwacis Cultural College (MCC), and Pigeon Lake Health Centre, to host a new session of the Community Wind Skills Training Program in Fall 2023. To make sure our program is a success, we are looking for a Local Wind Training Skills Champion to foster community interest, provide information to potential participants, and support event logistics and planning. The Local Wind Training Skills Champion will play an important role in building engagement, and connecting their community with future skills training programs and opportunities.
RESPONSIBILITIES ● Provide context for your local community and act as a community representative for the upcoming Wind Skills Training Program in Maskwacis this Fall 2023; ● Collaborate with the Renewable Skills team in the development of local community engagement and knowledge transfer for the program iteration; ● Attend local events in Maskwacis Four First Nations to foster community interest around the Wind Skills Training Program and provide detailed information to potential participants; ● Attend local Iron & Earth community events and be versatile in your role, (this could include leadership and facilitation); ● Facilitate communications between Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers and the Renewable Skills team; ● Represent the interests of Iron & Earth on behalf of workers, communities and Indigenous people in interactions with local policymakers and municipal governments; ● Support the Renewable Skills team to coordinate the integration of cultural awareness teachings and local content into the training program; ● Collect feedback about the Wind Training Skills Program and Iron & Earth from community members; ● Support event logistics in Maskwacis communities. APPLICANT QUALITIES ● Strong facilitation skills; ● Interested in building relationships within the community; ● Access to stable internet; ● Availability to attend weekly meeting with the Renewable Skills team and their partners (up to one hour); ● Previous experience working with the community is an asset; ● Former participant from one of the 2022 Iron & Earth Community Skills training program, a strong asset but not mandatory.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS Compensation and Hours This is a 3 to 6 hour per week contract position. Expected contract period from September 5, 2023 until November 2023, with the possibility of extension until March 2024. Compensation is commensurate with experience. Location Iron & Earth is a completely remote organization, however this position is an in person position, and the candidate should be located within Makswascis.
