Position Overview
MCTC is seeking a dynamic, organized, and culturally grounded Communications Officer to lead our internal and external communications efforts. This role will improve coordination across departments, enhance transparency, and ensure that timely information is shared with all Maskwacis nations.
This is a new position that will play a pivotal role in modernizing MCTC’s communications, including supporting our web design in the website redesign, which will serve as a central hub for programs, services, policies, and community updates. The Communications Officer will also provide basic IT support for administrative staff and contribute to external relations with partners and funders.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications:
· Develop and implement a MCTC communications strategy
· Create and manage editorial calendars for newsletters, announcements, and social media
· Coordinate with departments to promote programs, services, events, and achievements
· Establish emergency communications protocols
Website Redevelopment & Digital Tools:
· Support the web designer with the redesign and relaunch of the MCTC website to ensure it is mobile-friendly, easy to navigate, and accessible
· Manage content updates and support training staff on website use
· Integrate features such as an events calendar, job postings, service directories, downloadable forms
Internal Coordination & IT Support:
· Support interdepartmental communications and information sharing
· Provide basic troubleshooting and digital literacy training for staff
· Assist with documentation, policy development, and reporting
External Relations:
· Maintain consistent communication with off-reserve members, funders, and stakeholders
· Travel regularly to the four Nations and Pigeon Lake 138A to document events, programs, and initiatives
· Produce high-quality articles, website updates, and social media content to share community stories and promote activities
· Collaborate with external media outlets to extend MCTC’s communications reach beyond the Nations
· Support project communications by collaborating with external consultants to prepare and share timely updates
· Maintain consistent communication with off-reserve members, partners, funders, and other stakeholders
· Ensure culturally appropriate and inclusive messaging in all public-facing materials
Qualifications:
· Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
· Minimum 3 years’ experience in communications, preferably in an Indigenous or multi-community context
· Experience working with Indigenous and First Nations communities on communication efforts
· Experience managing websites and social media platforms
· Proficiency with graphic design, content management systems, and basic IT troubleshooting
· Knowledge of and respect for Cree culture, protocols, and traditions
· Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
· Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the MCTC Nations
Salary & Benefits: $72,000 plus benefits
· One-year term with a six-month probationary period; potential for extension based on funding
