Overview:
Samson Cree Nation is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to serve as Director of Personnel and Human Resources. This senior leadership position provides strategic oversight of the Nation’s employment framework and supports the Band Administrator in maintaining fair, consistent, and accountable personnel practices across all departments.
The Director plays a critical role in ensuring employment practices align with Nation policies, governance directions, and applicable labour standards while supporting a respectful and culturally grounded workplace.
Position Summary:
The Director of Personnel and Human Resources is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for all human resource functions within Samson Cree Nation. This includes employment policy oversight, recruitment processes, contract and classification review, employee relations, dispute resolution processes, and organizational workforce planning.
The Director works closely with the Band Administrator and Senior Management to ensure personnel practices are consistent, transparent, and aligned with the Nation’s governance framework and the Nipisihkopahk Employment Policy (NEP).
This role is responsible for ensuring that all personnel matters are addressed through consistent, policy-driven processes that support fairness, accountability, and risk mitigation for the Nation.
This position also oversees the Personnel Department and supports the development of strong workplace practices that reflect both professional standards and community values.
This position will support the ongoing strengthening and modernization of Samson Cree Nation’s personnel systems and employment frameworks.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership and oversight for the Nation’s Personnel Department
• Ensure employment practices align with Nation policies and applicable labour standards
• Review and oversee employment contracts, classifications, and compensation frameworks
• Provide guidance to management on employee relations and personnel matters
• Oversee formal dispute resolution and workplace conflict processes in accordance with policy, ensuring procedural fairness and proper documentation
• Coordinate, where appropriate, with cultural or community-based supports (e.g., mediation circles) as supplementary processes, not as a replacement for formal HR procedures
• Support organizational workforce planning and job classification structures
• Ensure consistent and fair application of personnel policies across departments
• Maintain employment documentation standards that meet governance and legal requirements
Qualifications:
• Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Law, or a related field
• Minimum 7–10 years of progressive human resources leadership experience
• Strong knowledge of employment legislation, HR policy, and organizational governance
• Experience working within Indigenous governance environments is considered an asset
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex personnel matters with professionalism and Confidentiality
• Ability to navigate complex workplace dynamics in a small or closely connected community while maintaining professionalism and impartiality
