Summary
We are seeking a reliable, hardworking Labourer to support essential community services with a core focus on funeral preparation, elder assistance and groundskeeping. This role demands flexible working hours, physical stamina and a deep sense of responsibility to serve the community with respect and care - especially during sensitive times. This position plays a vital role in honouring traditions, supporting elders, and maintaining sacred spaces.
Duties and Responsibilities
Funeral & Wake Support
· Assist HEO (Heavy Equipment Operator) with grave digging
· Split and prepare wood for ceremonial use
· Construct wooden crosses as needed, including late-night and weekend requests
· Deliver wood to wakes regardless of time, based on family needs
· Support other crews with cemetery cleaning and grass cutting
· Prepare funeral sites by hauling wood, coal, and diesel the night before
· Start overnight burns to thaw ground for next-day services
· Maintain readiness for funeral-related tasks at any hour
Elder Assistance
· Provide lawn care services for elders
· Assist with moving household items and furniture
· Haul garbage and debris as requested
· Offer respectful and patient support to elders in the community
Groundskeeping & Lawn Care
· Maintain cemeteries and elder properties with regular lawn care
· Operate lawn mowers and power equipment safely
· Assist with townsite beautification projects
· Support 3 Mile Site operations when staff are on leave
· Use chainsaws for felling, bucking, and splitting wood as needed
· Keep yard areas clean and organized for a tidy, professional appearance
Shop & Equipment Maintenance
· Clean and maintain shop trucks and workspaces
· Organize tool rooms, inventory tools and power equipment
· Ensure all equipment is stored properly and ready for use
Requirements & Expectations
· Valid Driver’s License (DL) required
· Reliable personal transportation is a must
· Willingness to work outdoors in cold and harsh conditions
· Available for overtime, weekend shifts, and on-call duties
· Willing to learn and safely operate power equipment
· Strong team player with a positive attitude and work ethic
· Responsible for keeping the shop truck clean, organized, and maintained
· Commitment to safety in all aspects of job duties
· Follow instructions from the Manager or Foreman for any labour-related tasks
Preferred Qualities
· Experience in manual labour or groundskeeping
· Familiarity with basic tools and machinery
· Respectful and compassionate demeanour, especially when assisting elders or supporting a funeral
· Ability to work independently and take initiative
Qualified candidates should have:
· An interest in environmental or civil engineering, waste management or heavy equipment operations;
· A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED);
· Physically fit for manual labour and the ability to lift heavy objects outdoors in various weather conditions.
· Knowledge of safety practices and the ability to operate waste collection vehicles.
· Strong coordination and organizational skills;
· Attention to detail and accuracy;
· Good written and verbal communication skills; and
· Determination to set and manage priorities to meet deadlines.
· Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends.
· Ability to follow safety protocols and procedures
· Must be willing to do alcohol and drug testing
